How it works

From PDF to audiobook in three steps

01Step

Drop in the PDF you want to listen to. DOCX and EPUB work too, up to 50 MB per file.

02Step

Audionarrator reads the document structure and builds a chapter list. Front matter like the table of contents and preface is hidden from playback.

03Step

Press play in the browser on any device, or download every chapter as MP3. Your listening position syncs across phone and laptop.

A PDF read aloud is not an audiobook

Most converters treat a book like one long article. They read the table of contents as prose, announce every page header, narrate the copyright notice, and hand you a single nine-hour audio file with no way to find your place. Fine for a memo. Unusable for a book.

Audionarrator reads the document the way a person does: it knows the difference between the preface and chapter one, and it treats them differently.

  • A chapter list, not a nine-hour file

Jump to chapter 12 directly. Each chapter is its own track with its own progress.

  • Front matter hidden by default

Table of contents, dedication, and copyright pages are classified and kept out of playback.

  • Resume across devices

Start on your laptop, continue on your phone at the exact sentence you left.

  • Ask the chapter a question

Each chapter has grounded Q&A that answers only from that chapter's text.

What we skip, on purpose

Scanned PDFs. A photographed page has no text to read. We detect scanned files at upload and tell you before you spend a word. OCR support is on the roadmap.

Equations, code, and figures. Reading a formula aloud symbol by symbol is hostile to listening. We skip them cleanly rather than narrate gibberish, and the PDF stays your reference for the math.

Questions

PDF to audiobook, answered

The questions people actually ask before uploading.

Is there a free way to convert a PDF to an audiobook?

Yes. Your first chapter is free regardless of length (up to 15,000 words), and every account starts with 5,000 free words plus a small monthly refill. No card required. That is enough to hear a real chapter of your own book before deciding anything.

How long does converting a PDF to an audiobook take?

Chapter detection takes about a minute. Audio generates per chapter in a few minutes each, and you can start listening to chapter one while the rest of the book generates in the background.

Can I download the audio as MP3?

Yes. Every chapter has an MP3 download, named so a folder of chapters sorts in reading order. Drop them into any music or podcast app for offline listening.

Does it work for large files like textbooks?

Yes, that is the case it was built for. Files up to 50 MB and hundreds of pages work, and the chapter list means you can jump straight to chapter 12 instead of scrubbing through one giant audio file.

Is it legal to convert a PDF I own into an audiobook?

Converting a file you own for your personal listening is the same legal ground as using a screen reader on it. Your files are processed privately for you alone, never redistributed, and never used for training.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in the browser with no app install. Audio keeps playing with the screen locked, lock-screen controls work, and chapters auto-advance, so it behaves like an audiobook app on a run or a commute.

What file types work besides PDF?

DOCX and EPUB upload the same way, and you can paste plain text directly. Whatever the format, you get the same chapter-aware audiobook treatment.

What about scanned PDFs?

Scanned, image-only PDFs need OCR, which is not live yet. Audionarrator detects a scanned file at upload and tells you upfront instead of producing garbage audio. If your PDF has selectable text, it works.
