Most online PDF counters work by uploading your document to their server, counting it there, and promising to delete it. For a manuscript under NDA, a thesis draft, or a client contract, that promise is doing a lot of work. This counter runs on a different architecture: the PDF engine executes in your browser, the same way it does inside the Audionarrator app, and the document stays on your machine from first byte to last.

The count covers everything in the PDF’s text layer: body text, headings, headers, footers, and captions. That matches how Acrobat counts and how narration tools meter, which makes it the right number for estimating audio length or translation cost, and slightly larger than the manuscript count your word processor showed before layout.

It counts every word in the PDF's text layer, including headers, footers, and captions, which is the same basis Adobe Acrobat uses. Expect small differences from your word processor's count, which sees the document before layout added page furniture.
It is almost certainly a scanned PDF: photographs of pages with no text layer underneath. Word counters, screen readers, and text-to-speech tools all need that text layer. Running the file through OCR software adds one.
