How it works

From textbook to audiobook in three steps

01Step

PDF or EPUB, up to 50 MB and hundreds of pages. The file your course provided or the ebook you bought both work.

02Step

Audionarrator maps the book's structure and hides what a textbook buries you in: table of contents, preface, index, appendices, and reference tables stay out of playback.

03Step

Audio generates per chapter, so chapter 12 is listenable in minutes without converting the other 800 pages. Listen at up to 2x, or download the MP3.

Your professor assigns chapter 12, not hours six through nine

A textbook is the worst possible input for a generic converter. Forty pages of front matter before the content starts. An index and three appendices after it ends. Chapters you were never assigned. Flattened into one audio file, all of that becomes noise you have to scrub through.

Audionarrator treats the textbook the way your syllabus does: as chapters, some of which matter this week. Built for the same readers as our students workflow.

  • Jump straight to the assigned chapter

The chapter list mirrors the book. Chapter 12 is one tap, not a scrub through nine hours of audio.

  • Convert only what you need

Audio generates per chapter on demand. Two assigned chapters cost two chapters of quota, not the whole book.

  • Front and back matter hidden

Table of contents, preface, index, appendices: classified and kept out of playback automatically.

  • Ask the chapter what you missed

Per-chapter Q&A answers only from that chapter's text. Zoned out on the walk? Ask instead of re-listening.

Where a textbook still needs your eyes

Equations, figures, and code. Skipped on purpose, because hearing a formula read symbol by symbol teaches nothing. Audio carries the concepts; the open book carries the math. Most students run it as the review pass, not the only pass.

Scanned editions. Older textbooks photographed page by page have no text layer to read. We detect this at upload and tell you before you spend a word. OCR is on the roadmap.

Questions

Textbook to audiobook, answered

The questions students actually ask before uploading.

Why isn't my textbook on Audible?

Publishers record the books that sell at airports, not 900-page course texts. The overwhelming majority of textbooks have no official audiobook and never will. Converting the copy you already own is the only realistic way to get one.

Do I have to convert the whole book?

No, and this matters for a textbook. Audio generates chapter by chapter, on demand. If your professor assigned chapters 4 and 12, you convert chapters 4 and 12. Your word quota goes to what you actually need to read.

Does it work for STEM textbooks with equations?

With an honest caveat. Prose, definitions, and explanations narrate well. Equations, code blocks, and figures are skipped deliberately, because reading a formula aloud symbol by symbol is useless to listen to. Students use it for the concept-review pass and keep the book open for the math.

What about nursing, medical, or engineering textbooks?

Yes, these are among the most common uploads. Technical terminology is pronounced well in most fields. For truly obscure terms, you can fix the source text and regenerate a chapter in minutes.

Is there a free way to try it?

Your first chapter is free regardless of length, up to 15,000 words, which covers almost any textbook chapter. Every account also starts with 5,000 free words plus a monthly refill. No card required.

My textbook is a scanned PDF. Will it work?

Scanned, image-only files need OCR, which is not live yet. Audionarrator detects a scanned file at upload and says so before you spend anything. If the text in your PDF is selectable, it will work.

Is converting my own textbook legal?

Listening to a copy you own, converted privately for your own study, sits on the same ground as using a screen reader. Your files are never shared, resold, or used for training.

Can I listen on my phone between classes?

Yes, in the browser with nothing to install. Playback continues with the screen locked, chapters auto-advance, and every chapter downloads as MP3 for offline listening on the walk to campus.
